In 2018, Evonik completed construction of a new 225,000 metric ton MMA plant in Mobile, Alabama at a cost of $450 million. This doubled Evonik's total North American MMA capacity and made it one of the largest MMA producers worldwide.


Other manufacturers like Arkema and Mitsubishi Rayon have also undertakencapacity expansions and debottlenecks at their MMA plants in the past 5 years. As of 2022, total U.S. MMA nameplate production capacity stands at over 1 million metric tons per year across seven manufacturing sites located in Texas, Alabama, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. This surge in domestic capacity has positioned the U.S. as one of the top three MMA producers globally along with China and Western Europe.

While Asia has substantial domestic MMA production capacity of its own, U.S. exports have found buyers due to competitive pricing and reliable supply. With Asian economies reshoring manufacturing and expanding infrastructure, MMA demand in the region is projected to keep rising substantially in the coming decades.


Future Outlook For U.S. MMA

As the sector's largest consuming region, North America will also continue supporting steady baseline capacity utilization rates at domestic MMA plants.
